Dental prostheses after periodontitis
First the gums, then the prosthesis – in that order, always.
Periodontitis is the most frequent cause of tooth loss in adults. Anyone who loses teeth because of it needs prostheses – and this is exactly where the order matters.
Why it is treated first
No restoration lasts on inflamed gums. Abutment teeth with deep pockets keep loosening, and implants in a bacterially burdened mouth more often develop peri-implantitis.
What is possible afterwards
Once periodontitis has healed, much is possible – with one limitation: the bone has receded, the teeth stand longer. Crown margins then lie deeper, and care becomes more demanding.
Lifelong aftercare
Treated periodontitis is not cured but brought to a standstill. Without regular aftercare it comes back – and takes the prosthesis with it. On the disease itself: Parodontologie-Berater.
