Cleaning dentures properly

Prostheses collect plaque like your own teeth, you just notice it later. Bacteria and fungi settle on denture acrylic; at the margin of the abutment teeth decay forms.

The daily routine

Take the denture out, clean it with a denture brush and liquid soap over a basin filled with water – that way it survives a fall. Then brush your own teeth and especially the abutments.

What does not help

Toothpaste is too abrasive and scratches the acrylic; plaque clings to those scratches all the more. Cleaning tablets do not replace brushing, they supplement it. Boiling water warps the denture.

Overnight

Take it out and store it dry or in water so that the mucosa can recover. Anyone who grinds at night or cannot do without it for other reasons should discuss that at the practice – it is not a blanket rule.
