Denture without a palate: when that works

The palatal plate of an upper full denture is the surface through which the hold is created. But it also covers the area with which we perceive temperature and part of the taste – and in some people it triggers a gag reflex.

When it can be left out

When the hold comes from somewhere else: from your own teeth as abutments (telescopic or attachment work) or from implants. With a purely tissue-borne full denture it cannot be left out – no suction area, no hold.

The gag reflex

It can often be brought under control by a shortened rear border and getting used to it. If it remains, the implant-supported solution is the reliable one – and for those affected usually the only one they can live with.
