Digital impressions: the scanner arrives in prosthetic dentistry too

What has long been standard in orthodontics is catching on in prosthetic dentistry: the intraoral scanner records the tooth rows in a few minutes, without material in the mouth and without gagging.

Professionally another point weighs more heavily: the data set can be used any number of times, transferred to the laboratory and compared with later recordings. Transfer errors between practice and laboratory become rarer.

For full dentures the classic impression is still widespread — there it is the movable margins that count, and a scan does not show those readily.
